Survival International, a charity group which advocates for tribal peoples' rights, estimated in 2013 there were about 100 groups around the world. The Mashco-Piro people of Peru have also largely avoided outside contact. They live a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and have attacked people who have visited the island in the past. Rough estimates have put the Sentinelese population at between 50 and 150, and they have their own language which is not spoken by any outsiders, and is unrelated to those on surrounding islands. It even passed a law in 2017 that made it illegal to post photos or videos of the Sentinelese, as well as other Andamanese groups, on social media. Since then, it has controlled access to the island and kept it under watch with its coast guard. The island has belonged to India since 1947, but is recognised as a sovereign state. India proclaimed North Sentinel Island as part of the Republic of India in 1970.

Their home on North Sentinel Island, in the Indian Ocean, is just under 60 square kilometres and is 1,200km from the Indian mainland.
